How to Use a Smartphone Gimbal: Setup and Your First Shot

A gimbal mounted wrong is worse than no gimbal: twitchy footage, a drained battery, and a device you stop using by week two. Setup takes five minutes, and you can start shooting with your phone's own camera app — the AOCHUAN app is optional.

1. Charge both batteries first. The handle takes about two hours; the remote charges over its own USB-C port. There's nothing to configure first — charged up and clamped in, you're ready to shoot on your phone's native camera app.

No arm to adjust and no balancing step to get wrong: the X3 is a one-piece foldable design that levels the phone by itself once it's powered on. Open the clamp, seat the phone in the middle (bare phone or slim case — a thick rugged case throws the weight off), unfold the arms and press power. You can also switch it on by long-pressing the remote's shooting button for three seconds.

3. Pick a mode with the handle button. Single click cycles PF, F, L, and POV. PF keeps the pan axis free, so left-right turns follow your hand while the horizon stays level — the default for walking. F frees tilt as well, adding up-and-down movement. L locks all three axes, so the camera keeps pointing exactly where you left it — the mode for push-in and pull-back moves. POV unlocks everything, so tilting the handle tilts the frame. Double-click to recenter; long-press S when the motors must keep up with fast moves.

4. Shoot your first clip. Hold it in two hands, elbows close to your body, and walk with bent knees and short steps. Lock focus and exposure on your subject, then move slowly — one motion per clip, and double-click the shutter to flip between landscape and portrait.

Face tracking, gesture control, panoramic shots, and the app's preset camera moves live in the AOCHUAN app — install it and pair over Bluetooth when you want them. Everything else, from stabilization to mode switching to the shutter, works from the handle and the remote alone.

6. Fold it, don't baby it. The Smart X3 collapses to 111.9 × 44.3 × 175mm, so it lives in your bag. Nothing to re-calibrate when you change phones — center the new one and go.

That's the whole routine: mount, power on, pick a mode, shoot. Five minutes of setup is the difference between a $79.99 tool you use every week and one that sits in a drawer.
